In 1996, I was approached at Manchester’s annual Festival of Fantastic Films and asked if I could interview actor David Warbeck on stage — with less than an hour’s warning. To add to the pressure, David had travelled to the event direct from hospital, where he’d been recovering after a violent assault at his home. Fortunately, I’d met his The Beyond co-star Catriona MacColl the previous day, and she vouched for me, putting David at ease. (Extracts from our conversation appeared as an extra on the Grindhouse Blu-ray release of The Beyond.)

In 2016, I was invited to Big Centre TV’s studio in Walsall to join Carl Jones for an edition of his movie magazine The Big Picture. This led in turn to Chrissie Harper and myself collaborating on several interview ‘packages’ for Carl’s show, the last of which aired in late October, on Big Centre’s final day as an independent channel (the following week, it was relaunched as part of the national network Made TV).

“I Can’t Breathe” (Birmingham, 2021): I was never sure whether this was some misdirected attempt to jump aboard the George Floyd bandwagon or a sign of support for the equally lamebrained decision by the city council to introduce a ‘clean air zone’ which helped no one and penalised all but the most wealthy. By early 2024, the fencing had been torn down.
